CC Mantra / Building One That Holds
Make the first step small enough to be slightly embarrassing
Ambition at the starting line is almost always a mistake.
People design new routines at the scale they eventually want, which means the very first instance is also the hardest one, at exactly the moment when there is nothing established to carry it. A daily hour is being asked to survive on enthusiasm alone. The far better approach is to set the initial commitment so low that it is faintly ridiculous: two minutes, one page, one item, one drawer. The size feels wrong because it will not achieve anything on its own, and that objection misunderstands what the early period is for. It is not for achieving. It is for establishing that the action reliably occurs.
There is a second advantage, which shows up later. A commitment that is small has somewhere to go on a bad day. If your routine is an hour and you have twenty minutes, the honest options are to do a diminished version, which feels like failure, or to skip, which breaks the chain. If your routine is two minutes and you have twenty, you overshoot constantly and it feels like generosity. Most people who keep something going for years are running a very small formal commitment and exceeding it most of the time without noticing.
The trap is expanding the definition once things are going well. After a good fortnight it is tempting to promote the two minutes to twenty, because the two minutes now feels beneath you. Resist that, or at least keep the small version as the official floor. The floor is what you fall back to, and if you have quietly raised it while conditions were favourable you have removed your own safety net just before you need it.
